Today is the last day of 2019! Wishing you a bright new year to follow.

…But what does that look like, again?

What is your vision of an amazing 2020? How do you want your new decade to kick off?

From here, we can dream big! We can talk about the goals that we have personally or professionally, and we can get outrageous about how we wish the world would change to become more of the place we want to live. Political changes, environmental improvements, social unity! Yeah, that’d be great!

Too bad we can’t make those decisions for other people.

What we can do is make changes for ourselves in our own lives. Not nearly as much fun to dream about and a whole lot more work, but hey that’s what we have to work with, right? And today is a fantastic day to reflect on what has been, what we can learn from it, and to set our course based not so much on goals as on the habits and behaviors that deliver them.

Those New Year’s Resolutions from last year? Where did those go again? Right.

You can dust them off and start them over again. Or you can look at the kinds of things you did with them last time (and the time before that!), and learn something. Setting a conscious pattern in motion helps us become the people we want to be. Set a goal and maybe you’ll get there and still be the same person you are now.

That’s one reason why goals in and of themselves don’t tend to turn out so great.

Another is that we tend to fixate instead of course correcting as needed. Your vision of “a 2020 of AWESOMENESS” might benefit from some updating along the way.

How are you keeping aligned to your vision as things change?

That’s an honest question.

If you already have an answer, go you!

If not, here’s a gift to fuel you in the coming year: The Vision2020 Annual Review overview

I originally recorded it last week for friends & family, but then they wanted to share it. So I spruced it up a bit to be sharable with everyone. Please use it and feel free to suggest it to your loved ones and colleges as you see fit.

It’s a 24-minute walkthrough of the annual review process that I use personally, and with clients. It’s not complicated, requires no special tools (a notebook, calendar, and task/project list), and the full process on your own should only take about an hour.

An hour to set your course for the year really isn’t much. And the busier you are, the more important it is.

If you don’t have that much time available today, you can at least set this time aside on your calendar for the next day or two, right?
